Important information for postal workers

(1 May, 2009): Following widespread media coverage regarding the outbreak of the swine flu virus in Mexico and the United States the CEPU Divisional Office and NSW P&T Branch sought clarification from Australia Post on what the corporation was doing to manage any possible risks presented to postal members working at the corporation’s mail handling facilities – especially for members managing international mail.

It was important to obtain accurate information about the risk to members from handling international mail items that originated from countries where human cases of the swine flu virus has been confirmed.

  • The CEPU has reviewed advice provided to Post from the Department of Health and Aging, where the Department informs Post that there is no infectious risk for Australia Post staff handling mail or parcels received from countries affected by swine flu virus and no special precautions are necessary.

The Department of Health and Aging (DOHA) is the Australian Government department responsible for monitoring public health in Australia.

Australia Post has informed us it has acted and will continue to act on advice from DOHA.

The CEPU will continue to monitor the outbreak of the swine flu virus for all relevant and important developments.

Any new information will be provided to members immediately it becomes available.

Latest information about Swine Flu can be accessed from the DOHA website www.health.gov.au
