(4 June 2010) Baseline activities for the motorcycle separate delivery evaluation have commenced in NSW, Vic and Qld. The baseline gathering exercise is to get a picture of the current situation on the target rounds before trialling the separate bundle delivery (SBD).
By way of background, SBU involves separately bundling machine sequenced mail and manually sequenced mail during indoor delivery duties. The PDO then delivers mail from the two separate bundles as opposed to one bundle under the current delivery process. SBD is performed with a modified carrier system. The key changes in order to undertake the SBD are no merging of machine and manually sequenced mail during the indoor process, both are bundled separately, and at the point of delivery the postie accesses mail from the various sections of the carrier and inserts into mail boxes.
At the Seven Hills and Lakemba Delivery Centres in NSW initial briefings have been conducted with employees in accordance with agreed CEPU/Post guidelines. The union has ensured that participation in the SBD trials is on a voluntary basis. A CEPU nominee will form part of the group of people observing the trials. In addition, the ergonomic consultant engaged by the CEPU will observe the trials and have access to data from same. The implications for CEPU members arising out of SBD are potentially enormous and the union is doing all it can to ensure that trials of the new process are properly evaluated.
